SPACE4KIDS

Your turn!

SPACE4KIDS is unfortunately closed from 3 May to 13 May 2024 due to the "Sommerblutfestival"!

"A museum space and a playroom have many things in common".

(Endres/Rousseau 2020:6)

According to Art. 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, all children have a right to play and to participate freely in cultural and artistic life.

But is that really true?

We take this right seriously. In YOU ARE THERE! - SPACE4KIDS we create space for a participatory and experimental programme with and for children in an ethnological museum with its complex social debates on almost 1,400 square metres.

Throughout Europe, ethnological museums discuss their future intensively, but do not include children and young people. The realities of life for children living in Cologne today have also changed in recent decades. For example, almost 60% of the inhabitants of Cologne under the age of 18 have a migration background. This means that the museum should be a place where this generation feels represented and welcome in all its diversity.

YOU ARE THERE! - SPACE4KIDS involves children in shaping the future of the museum in order to become a place for a post-migrant society with their help.

Because we see children not just as passive visitors, but as active experts who bring about change in their environment. To this end, we open our doors wide for children to try out new participatory formats and methods and create an experimental space for sensory, playful and collective experiences. The RJM will become an inclusive meeting place for fun, reflection, exchange, movement, curiosity, celebration, creativity and empowerment.

YOU ARE THERE! - SPACE4KIDS is a cooperation with the Kölner Integrationshaus (In-Haus Kalk e.V.), a New German Organisation working for a more racism-free, diversity-sensitive and just world.

SPACE4KIDS can be visited by schools, intercultural associations, OGS, groups and other initiatives with prior registration. Registration at: rjm-veranstaltungen@stadt-koeln.de

For children and their parents, SPACE4KIDS opens on certain days, which are announced on the website.

The various participatory formats, glimpses behind the scenes of the museum and dates can be found here.

With April 8th just around the corner, there will be a short introduction to Roma history. Everyone has the opportunity to trace the Roma flag, individually and with different materials. On April 8, 2024, the Roma flag will be hoisted at 5 p.m. in a festive ceremony at the historic Rathaus e.V. in the presence of Mayor Henriette Reker. And you can be there - either at the town hall or you can take a photo of yourself with "your" Roma flag on April 8, 2024 and send it to Rom e.V. as a sign of solidarity: https://www.instagram.com/rombuk_2019/

The workshop takes place in cooperation with Rom e.V. and Robert Rasid. Robert is 35 years young and comes from the Roma community. He has been working with young people in the fields of art, music and empowerment for over 15 years.
